My dudes! Did up this piece today for the @lettering_ladies prompt. I have been meaning to spend a few solid hours lettering for ages, it's so nice to get lost in creating art on a rainy Sunday 🍃🌧️ Featured In This piece was featured in @lettering_ladies, @womenoftype and @weallcareaustralia

Dirty

I haven't felt like making art lately. Just cbf! And when I haven't made art in a while I get this looming anxiety that I haven't made art which makes me not want to make art and the cycle continues. But today when I was elbow deep in compost saying hello to worms and getting dirty, I decided that I would make something. It's by no means a masterpiece, but hey at least I followed through. Show me your half cooked art that's an attempt to get back in the swing of things x 🦠 [...]

What does Anxiety feel like?

By |2020-12-09T02:27:51+00:00May 21st, 2020|Categories: Blog, Lettering|Tags: , , , |

How's everyone holding up out there? About a year ago I started listening to Terrible, Thanks for Asking which had a great guest on there. She was a little girl with wisdom beyond her years, who had what's called an anxiety box. In it were little treasures that make her happy, along with these mindful questions. What does anxiety feel like? Break down the experience you're having in your body. What are you worried about? Think objectively about what's making you jazzed. What will make you happy? Is it something that you [...]

I See You — IWD 2020

By |2020-03-11T00:41:56+00:00March 11th, 2020|Categories: Animation, Illustration, Lettering|Tags: , , , |

As a white, middle class cis woman, I celebrate IWD for women's achievements generally, but this year I'm focussing on those who aren't seen enough. First nations women. Women of colour. Trans women. Women in poverty. Survivors of domestic abuse that identify as women. If you wanna join in, upload your artwork to Instagram with the hashtag #iseeyou2020 and tag me @alnmakes. Please spread the word, you do research and encourage your loved ones to donate to local orgs that support underprivileged women. See women, hear women, raise them up.

Fundraiser for RFS

By |2020-03-11T00:23:23+00:00January 30th, 2020|Categories: Fundraising|Tags: , , , |

In January I set up my first fundraiser to raise money for our wonderful fire fighters - ALL PROFITS DONATED! I designed, organised and paid for tee printing and sold these $30 shirts for NSW Rural Fire Service. The tees were printed by a great company in Sydney - Black Sun Printing Co. I nearly hit my goal of selling 30 shirts in total, but with only five left I'm still pretty chuffed with the result (if you're interested in buying a shirt, please email me — alexandra@alnmakes.com). Once they're all sold I'll have raised over [...]

Compassion Over Comparison

By |2020-05-22T06:43:55+00:00December 12th, 2019|Categories: Animation, Illustration, Lettering|Tags: , , , |

A very dear friend said this to me one time when I apologised for complaining about my wisdom teeth when she was going through something much tougher! The full quote was "Don't be sorry, we don't do comparisons here, only compassion." She is a beautiful friend. Illustration based from a photograph by @amyshamblen

Comparing Yourself to Others

By |2020-03-11T00:20:39+00:00December 11th, 2019|Categories: Illustration, Lettering|Tags: , , , , , |

Thoughts of everyone I have ever compared myself to on social media or face to face belong in the trash, whether it's creative or physical comparisons. I am the only me and you are the only you and that is great. Tag someone who needs to hear this 🗑️

Be a Self-Encourager

By |2020-03-11T00:21:06+00:00October 15th, 2019|Categories: Animation, Lettering|Tags: , , , , , |

"There's no need to wait around feeling glum, hoping someone will come along and say something nice to you. Do it yourself! Use positive words to change you attitude. See it as the path to sanity. Be a self-encourager." I love this piece of advice, and I talk to myself on the reg 😂🌈 It's gotten me out of a lot of anxiety driven situations, or gotten me through a really hard day at work. Have you read The To Be List by  Latesha Randall with Sebastian Walter? 70 chapters to help you slow down [...]

Climate Strike

By |2020-03-11T00:21:28+00:00September 28th, 2019|Categories: Animation, Lettering|Tags: , , , , , |

The world has just seen the two biggest climate strike events in our history! With 4 million+ people last week and numbers to be announced for yesterday, change is coming. It was amazing to march alongside people of all ages that are equally as passionate about this terribly important cause. If you're ever in conversation with a climate change denier, my friend Lee Constable recommended this website which is a great resource made by a science communicator. It arms you with simple rebuttal for common arguments against climate change. View the website. [...]

Use a Keep Cup

By |2020-03-11T00:21:48+00:00August 28th, 2019|Categories: Lettering|Tags: , , , , , |

Friendly reminder to use your keep cup pals!! I drew this up a year ago and never posted it. I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to this, even going so far as to yell and rant at people I love dearly (sorry). Not only is this important from a biodegradable perspective (lack there of), we also have to think about the production of STUFF. Everything we use, especially products of convenience, has a global footprint. Check out supa gifts if you have a mate/spouse/family member who has an imminent birthday but doesn't [...]
